Disciple of Moses
Joshua served Moses from his youth, ascended the mountain with him, and stood in the Tent of Meeting. He was one of the two spies (with Caleb) who brought back a report of faith, and so he merited to enter the land and to lead the people.
"Be Strong and Courageous"
After the death of Moses, God commanded Joshua: "Be strong and courageous... for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go." Three times he was told to take courage - a call to lead through faith and devotion to the Torah.
Crossing the Jordan
As Israel entered the land, the Jordan was parted: the moment the feet of the priests bearing the Ark touched the water, the waters stood still, and all the people crossed on dry ground. Twelve stones were set up as a memorial of the miracle.
The Walls of Jericho
The fortified city of Jericho was conquered without battle: for seven days the priests circled it with rams' horns, and on the seventh day, with a great shout, the walls fell down flat. Rahab, who had saved the spies, was spared along with her family.
The Sun at Gibeon
In the battle to defend Gibeon a rare miracle occurred: Joshua called out, "Sun, stand still over Gibeon" - and the sun stood still until he defeated his enemies. "There was no day like it before or after."
Dividing the Land
Joshua divided the land among the tribes by lot, and appointed cities of refuge and Levites. In his final address he called on the people to choose: "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord", and made a covenant at Shechem.
