The Generation of the Flood and the Righteous Man
The earth was filled with violence, and "the Lord saw that the wickedness of man on the earth was great." Within that generation, Noah stood out in his righteousness. God informed him of the coming Flood and commanded him to build a great ark that would save him, his family, and the animals.
Building the Ark
Noah built the ark of gopher wood, in three decks, and coated it with pitch inside and out. Into the ark he brought two of every living creature — and of the clean animals, seven pairs — along with food for them all. His faith was expressed in quiet, persistent work, year after year.
The Flood
"All the fountains of the great deep burst open, and the windows of the heavens were opened." The rain fell for forty days and forty nights, the waters covered the high mountains, and every living thing outside the ark was wiped out. The ark was borne upon the waters while the storm raged all around.
The Dove and the Rainbow
When the waters subsided, Noah sent out a raven and after it a dove. The second time, the dove returned with an olive leaf in its beak — a sign that the waters had receded. Noah, his wife, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, and their wives — eight souls — went out into a renewed world.
The Covenant
Noah built an altar and gave thanks to God, and God made a covenant with him: never again would He bring a flood to destroy the earth. The sign of the covenant — the rainbow in the cloud, which recalls the promise in every generation. Noah's story is a story of faith, patience, and a new beginning.
