The Spies in Jericho

Before the conquest of the land, Joshua sent two spies to Jericho. They came to the house of Rahab, and the king of Jericho sought to hand them over. Rahab risked her life and hid them on the roof beneath stalks of flax.

Recognition of the God of Israel

Rahab declared a surprising faith: "For the Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth below." She had heard of the parting of the Red Sea and of Israel's victories, and understood that the land had been given to them.

The Scarlet Cord

Rahab lowered the spies by a rope from the window and asked them to save her family. They instructed her to tie a scarlet (red) cord in the window - a sign by which her house would be spared on the day of conquest.

The Rescue of the Family

When Jericho fell, Rahab and all her father's house were saved - in the merit of her kindness and her faith. "And she dwelt among Israel." One who had been a foreigner in an enemy city became part of the people of Israel.

A Symbol of Repentance

Rahab became a symbol of repentance and joining by choice. Tradition tells that prophets and priests descended from her. Her story teaches that faith and good deeds open the gates of belonging to the people.
